Eleven wells have been drilled in Jamaica to include two offshore wells. Ten of the wells possessed oil and or gas shows. The St Anne’s Gas seep on the north coast has been known for over 100 years and there are satellite indications of slicks and anecdotal evidence for oil offshore. To date two distinct oil families have been identified, the Smackover, Upper Jurassic type oil found in the Northern block and the younger Eocene Punta Gorda equivalent source rocks and shows on the found in the Chapleton #1 well. A possible Upper Cretaceous source contribution is under investigation. The dry gas leakage from the Cretaceous inliers represents a third deeper source. Three companies hold acreage at present offshore southern Jamaica, Finder Petroleum and partner Flow Energy (formally Gippsland offshore), blocks 6,7,10,11 & 12 Walton basin and Pedro Bank; Rainville Energy (blocks 4, 9, 13 & 14 Pedro Bank) and Proteam Limited (blocks 1, 5,8 & 17) Western and South Eastern offshore. The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica are to open the second official licence round on March 1, 2010 in London and then take the road show to Houston in April. Click here for the day's agenda. Some 19 offshore blocks (75,382 sq km) and 4 onshore blocks (10,991 sq km)will be made available, equivalent to over 409 UK North Sea blocks
